The Peking Man Site is located west of Zhoukoudian town in Fangshan District, about 48 kilometers from downtown Beijing. The elevation of the site is 145 meters. It is three kilometers long from north to south and 1.5 kilometers wide from east to west. The area belongs to the erosion hills in front of the West Mountain in Beijing, and the mountain is mainly composed of limestone of the Paleozoic Ordovician system. The rock was formed some 500 million years ago, and due to erosion for a long time, Karst caves were formed underground. Since 1918, in the sedimentation layer in the Karst caves, scientists have discovered more than 20 ruins of human civilization and fossil sites. According to the sequence of the activities of the ancient humans, they were the Peking Man site, the New Cave Man site and the Upper Cave Man site. The skulls of the Peking Man, the teeth fossils of the New Cave Man and the skulls of the Upper Cave Man unearthed, the fire ashes as thick as six meters and more than 100,000 pieces of stone tools in different shapes indicate that the history of human evolution and development is at least 500,000 years. Before these archaeological findings, the earliest human fossils already unearthed in the world have a history of no more than 100,000 years. The excavation and findings at Longgu Hill in Zhoukoudian gave us a positive answer to the question “where was the human being from,” which had puzzled us for thousands of years and had led to numerous beautiful legends and tales. The discovery and study of the Peking Man found at Longgu Hill had an indelible historical merit in revealing the development and evolution history of the human being.
